Letter to the Editor: Spring 2026

Spring has always carried with it a sense of renewal, a second chance, and a fresh start.

Spring has always carried with it a sense of renewal, a second chance, and a fresh start. For farmers, it marks the beginning of another planting season, when hope is planted alongside every seed. But this year, that hope is tempered by uncertainty. Tight margins, rising input costs, and persistently dry conditions.

Across our region, many producers are entering the field with difficult questions. Fertilizer, fuel, and equipment costs remain high, while commodity prices have offered little reassurance. At the same time, the lack of consistent rainfall has left soil moisture levels less than ideal.

Yet, if there is one constant in agriculture, it is the determination of the farmer. Generations before faced their own hardships and found ways to endure. Today’s challenges are no different in that respect.

This season may call for a more cautious approach, perhaps fewer acres, different crop mixes, and tighter management of every input dollar.

Equally important is the strength found in community. Conversations at the co-op, shared advice among neighbors, and support from local organizations all play a role in helping producers navigate difficult times. No one farms alone, even if it sometimes feels that way.

As planters roll and the dust rises behind them, it’s worth remembering that agriculture has always been an act of faith-faith in the land, in the seasons, and in the work itself. This spring, that faith may be tested more than usual. But it also serves as a reminder of the grit and perseverance that define those who work the soil.

We wish all our farmers a safe and successful planting season. May the rains come when they are needed and may the seeds you plant today carry the promise of better days ahead.
